NBC Covers Forced Evictions in Rio
February 2014 | After several weeks of WITNESS liaising behind the scenes with producers from the investigative news unit at NBC, a news segment about forced evictions in Rio de Janeiro aired in the US on Nightly News on February 24th, 2014, and on The Today Show on the 25th. This marked the end of the Sochi Games and highlighted forced evictions as one of the many challenges facing Rio in the lead up to the 2016 Olympics.
WITNESS referred community leaders, suggested specific news angles, and recommended a list of interviews. The piece sparked additional media coverage nationally and also featured an interview with Rio mayor Eduardo Paes, who was directly questioned by the NBC team on many of these issues.
